Municipal Elections
Municipal Elections
Municipal elections will take place on May 16th 2026.
All persons who have reached the age of 18 by election day and are registered on the electoral roll in the municipality have the right to vote at the polling station.As no candidate list was submitted to the Langanesbyggð election committee, the election will be held as an unbound election.In an unbound election, voters may vote for anyone who is listed on the electoral roll in Langanesbyggð, except for those who have legally requested an exemption from election.
The following municipal council members have requested an exemption from re-election:
- Halldóra Jóhanna Friðbergsdóttir
- Gunnlaugur Steinarsson
Instructions for completing the ballot paper
The ballot paper in an unbound election is blank, so voters are advised to decide in advance how they wish to vote before arriving at the polling station.
A voter may vote for up to 7 principal members and 7 substitute members. Voters may bring a note with them into the voting booth. The use of phones or cameras in the voting booth is not permitted.In the upper part of the ballot paper, the voter writes the names of the principal members, together with their home address, up to a maximum of 7 persons. The order of the principal members on the ballot paper does not matter; each of them receives one vote as a principal member.In the lower part of the ballot paper, the voter writes the names of the substitute members, together with their home address, in the order in which the voter wishes them to take a seat, up to a maximum of 7 persons.
A vote is valid if:
- only principal members are listed — 1 to 7 names;
- only substitute members are listed — 1 to 7 names. If more than 7 substitute members are listed, only the first 7 names will be considered valid;
- the full name or home address is not written, provided that it is clear who is meant.
A vote is invalid if:
- more than 7 principal members are listed;
- the ballot paper is marked or identified in such a way that it could be traced back to the voter.
Assistance in the voting booth
A voter has the right to assistance when voting and does not need to give a reason. The person providing assistance is bound by confidentiality.
Assistance may be provided by the presiding election officer or by another person chosen by the voter. If the voter brings their own assistant, that person must complete a special form.
