Maritime mines in Langanes

During the second world war maritime mines were set up in the ocean, where the sailing routes were near the east part of the country. When the weather was bad, sometimes the mines would break from the fence and float to the coast. Some of them exploded below the village Skálar at Langanes and caused a lot of damage to the houses there. This became quite a threat for the people in the village and was eventually one of the reasons for the abandonment of Skálar in the 1950's.

The artist Jóhann Ingimarsson or Nói, unveiled his sculpture Tundurdufl  which means Mine in the summer of 2011. The sculpture is located at Skoruvík, Langanes. Nói said that he hoped this piece of art would remind people of war and the cruelty of mankind.
