Engelskagjá - The English gorge

The gorge is located in the sea cliffs by Fontur, the tip of Langanes peninsula. It's name originates from a shipwreck in the 18th century. English sailors from the ship are said to have managed to climb the steep cliffs after the wreck. However the captain was the only one who ended up surviving the exposure. A large white cross still stands between Skoruvík and Skálar in memory of the crew.
